Meal replacer as total diet replacement

Many people who want to reduce excess weight fast opt for a total diet replacement product. This is special diet where all meals throughout the day are replaced by special products. There is a difference between a Low Calorie Diet (LCD) and a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). For a LCD the recommended energy intake is 1,200 kcal while for a VLCD it is between 600 and 800 kcal. In order to prevent deficiencies, specific rules and regulations apply for products intended to be used as a total diet replacement.

  • One total diet replacement has to contain between 800 and 1,200 kcal.
  • The protein content must be at least 25 percent and maximal 50 percent of the energy; it must not exceed 125 g per day.
  • The maximum fat content should not exceed 30 percent of the energy of the product.
  • The amount of linoleic acid should be at least 4.5 g.
  • Total diet replacement products must contain between 10 and 30 g of dietary fiber.
  • Certain minimum levels for vitamins and minerals apply as well.

Important to know: legal aspects

In particular, when it comes to food supplements and replacement products, it is important to keep an eye on the current legal framework conditions. You can always rely on nutrineo in this respect. Since 20 July 2016, Regulation (EU) No 609/2013 (FSG) has stipulated total diet replacement products.

This regulation replaces Directive 2009/39/EC on foodstuffs intended for particular nutritional use (known as the dietary framework directive).  Different from meal replacement products, food intended to replace the entire diet (total diet replacement) fall within the scope of the FSG Regulation (Food for Specific Groups).
